Dr Liam Toner

MD (distinction), BSc, FRACP

Dr Liam Toner is a Melbourne based general cardiologist, cardiomyopathy and cardiac imaging specialist. Liam is available for private consultations in Eltham, Laurimar, St Helena and Heidelberg. Public appointments include the Austin Hospital, Alfred Hospital and the Monash Alfred Baker Centre for Cardiovascular Research.

Liam completed medical school at The University of Melbourne in 2015 which included an overseas placement at the prestigious University of Cambridge. Liam graduated with distinction, was appointed to the Dean’s honours list and awarded the Lorna King medal for clinical excellence.

After completing his basic physician training at the Austin hospital, Liam completed his advanced cardiology training at the Austin and Alfred hospitals in Melbourne. Awarded his FRACP in cardiology in 2022, Liam went on to complete a sub-specialty fellowship in advanced cardiac imaging at the Victorian Heart Hospital in 2023. In 2024 he worked for the National Health Service at the highly regarded St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, undertaking a fellowship in inherited cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease) and cardiac MRI.

His cardiology sub-speciality interests include stress testing, transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, valvular heart disease, inherited and acquired cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease) as well as cardiovascular risk assessment.

In the public healthcare setting, Liam works as a consultant cardiologist at the Austin Hospital and Alfred Hospital in the cardiac imaging department and the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy clinic. He is widely published and currently engaged in cutting-edge cardiovascular research with an adjunct appointment at Monash University through the Monash Alfred Baker Centre for Cardiovascular Research.
